“Isn’t it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to believe that there are fairies at the bottom of it too?”
The world is a beautiful place. Sometimes. On my back there is a small tattoo of the Yin Yang symbol. The Yin Yang symbol has become a cornerstone for the photos I take. In life, there are moments of beauty to be caught and treasured. Gritty realism can reveal stark moments of happiness. The pictures I take almost exclusively focus on people, this contrasts with why I pick up my camera, which is often to seek solitude. Solitude is an attribute that brings us closer to our environment. While the environment is ever-changing, it is the hunt for the perfect 1/200th of a second that drives me.
When creating photographs, my camera provides confidence and a cover from which to explore. Strong shoes and cheap umbrellas become valuable items of equipment. The viewfinder, smaller than a fingernail, creates a window to shape the world according to my perspective. Each photograph represents a split second of a subject’s life, yet time is precious and a successfully taken frame deserves attention. Selected photos may be processed in colour or in black and white, reflecting my desire to explore a range of styles. Conformity can crush creativity.
The world is not a photo, and it would be foolish to think otherwise. The moments we seek are rare and brief. Scenes may appear the same through different eyes, yet our interpretations differ. I embrace the history of Street Photography and find inspiration from contemporary artists and photographers. Once complete, a photo takes on a life of its own. I aim for my photos to inspire, bring joy, or maybe just add a little more magic to the world. We are in this together….
